This intricate piece depicts a view of bustling streets of New Market, Kolkata, India from one of the tall building in the area. The historic clock tower can be seen on the right side of the painting. Formerly known as Sir Stuart Hogg Market this giant shopping arcade was thrown open to the colonizing English populace with some fanfare on Jan 1, 1874. This market has stood the test of time and has remained mostly unchanged through the generations of shoppers and shopkeepers that have frequented and made a living at this market.
